Spring Replacement Visit in Huntington Beach

The Ninety Minutes, Laid Out

A broken torsion spring is the most common reason anyone in Huntington Beach rings a garage door number, and it is also the job people know least about, because it happens above the doorway where nobody looks. Here is the visit rather than the theory.

Before we arrive

You will have a two hour window and a call about fifteen minutes out. Two things help before we get there. Move anything stacked directly under the door, roughly a metre in from the opening, because that is where the door will be sitting while we work. And accept now that the car is not coming out. With a spring gone the door weighs what the door actually weighs, which on a double is well over a hundred kilos, and we are not lifting it repeatedly to shuffle a vehicle.

The first ten minutes

We park at the kerb, not across the driveway, so you can still get past on foot. We come in, look at the spring, and check that the diagnosis you got on the phone matches what is above the door. Occasionally it does not. A door that will not lift can also be a parted cable or a stripped opener gear, and if it turns out to be one of those we will tell you the new duration and the new price before we touch anything.

The noisy part

Loosening the set screws and taking the old spring off the shaft involves an impact driver, and that is the loudest stretch of the whole job. It is a couple of minutes, in bursts. If someone in the house works nights, tell us when you book and we will do the quiet stages first and save this for later in the visit.

The quiet part

Sliding the shaft, seating the new spring, then winding it with bars is almost silent and takes the longest. This is the stage where people usually go back inside. We wind to the door’s actual weight, not to a number from a chart, and then check it by hand.

What we are choosing for you

Springs are rated by cycles, one cycle being one full open and close. A builder grade spring is typically rated around 10,000 cycles, which for a household that comes and goes four times a day is roughly seven years. We fit a higher cycle spring as standard because the price difference on the part is small and the difference in how often you see us is not. On the blocks close to the water we also look hard at the cables and the bottom brackets while the tension is off, because salt works into stranded steel from the inside and a cable can look fine from the floor while its core is going.

The last ten minutes

We disconnect the opener and lift the door by hand. A balanced door stops and holds wherever you leave it, so we let go at waist height and you watch it stay there. Then we reconnect, put a length of timber flat under the door, and close it so you see the reversal. We wipe the track, sweep for hardware, and put the old spring in the van.

The paperwork

You get a written note of the spring size and cycle rating, the date, and what was tested. Keep it somewhere, because in seven years it tells the next person exactly what is above your door.

Call (657) 258-9861 to book. If the door is currently half open and jammed, leave it, and say so on the phone.
